- Breakfast was quiet at first, just coffee and yogurt and some bakery muffins that Josie had brought with her from New York. She and Clark shared the simple meal at an outdoor table on a small bluestone patio behind her kitchen, surrounded by native ferns and lovely woodland trees. They spoke of drinking too much, and Josie's need for a clear head on workdays in New York, and how much more relaxed Clark's artistic life is.
- After the breakfast dishes were taken care of, Clark asked Josie if she wanted to go for a run, like they used to do once in a while when they were teenagers. She agreed and they were soon off, an easy jog up the dirt driveway and then up the dirt road that leads up and out of the small river valley, the two of them reminiscing some more about Josie's mother and Clark's father, and the nice suburban home Josie and her mother had moved into with Clark and his father when Josie and Clark were teens.
- "You didn't like me much at first, did you," Clark asked as they jogged.
